Each year in the spring, the San Marcos Mutt Strutt, is held to show off our canine friends, while raising funds for the shelter animals and spay and neuter programs.

The 6th Annual Mutt Strutt held on Saturday, April 18, 2009, was a barking success!  After being awoken by a thunderstorm at 6:00 am, the rains departed by 9:15 am and dry weather prevailed for the 10:00 o’clock walk, pet contests and silent auction.  Over 65 dogs and their owners came out to support the San Marcos Animal Shelter and honor Donna Bellion, founding member of the San Marcos Mutt Strutt, who passed away in July 2008.

Participating in the walk were dogs of various breeds and sizes.  Also included was a cockatoo, who rode on his person’s shoulder!  It was a toss-up on whether the people were walking their dogs or if the dogs were walking their people!  There was a Rottweiler pulling his own wagon and Dory, a three-legged French Bulldog, who rode in her own custom carriage!

The annual pet contests commenced once the walk was completed.  Larry, once a “pound puppy” who now resides with Susan and Don Yule, won for Best Bark.  Best Trick was won by Velvet, a Cocker Spaniel, taught/owned by Alexandria Nixon.  Izzy, a Yorkie-Poo owned by Lynda and Robert Wade, was quite the fashion plate and won for Best Dressed.  Broozer, an English Bulldog, and Mark Gonzales won for Best Dog/Owner Look-A-Like, much to the chagrin of co-owner and wife, Georgie Gonzales.  This year’s participants confirmed what scientists have stated before, pets and their owners tend to look more and more alike as the years go by!

A silent auction was added for the first time this year and was enjoyed by all.  There were a variety of items donated by both businesses and individuals alike.  Over $1,000 dollars was collected for the San Marcos Animal Shelter from the silent auction alone!  Everyone agreed the silent auction is a must for next year’s Mutt Strutt.

We want to thank all the volunteers, sponsors – businesses and individuals, who participated in this year’s Mutt Strutt.  We also want to thank the participants who braved the weather to ensure that this year’s Mutt Strutt in memory of Donna Bellion was a success.  Please mark your calendar for Saturday, April 17, 2010, for the 7th Annual Mutt Strutt – we hope to see you and your pet next year!
